Is this normal? When my ipaq 2210 has been off for a while and loses it's
charge it default to factory settings losing all my data? If so is there a
way to back it all up to my cf card? Surely rom storage would stop this
happening?

It NEVER happened with my palm.

when you allow your battery to discharge completely: yes indeed, then the
2210 will reset to factory defaults and loose all of its data. That's why
you best leave the machine in the cradle, connected to some power to keep
the battery charged, when you don't use the machine for some time.

Of course you can always store data to memorycards, you can choose
between CF cards and SD cards in this case: the contents of those cards
is not affected in any way by empty batteries or hard resets or whatever.
Data on memorycards stays intact, unless you format the card or erase the
data yourself.

It would happen on your palm if you left it long enough. How long are
you leaving yiour ipaq off the cradle and off? It should last for
several days of none use without losing anythings.

iPAQ includes a backup program that can be used to make a backup to rom
storage. Then if this happens you can restore your stuff.

The Asus pda automatically saves all of the data to a memory card when the
battery gets low, aren't there utilities that can do this?

Called smartkeeper, Asus say:
'System backup with SmartKeeper

ASUS employed the revolutionary Smart Keeper technology to resolve your fear
of loosing(sic) important data.

The new user-oriented feature intelligently and automatically backs up
existing system status when power level is low to prevent data loss.

You can now relax, because your important files and documents are in good
hands.'

Yes there are - iPAQ Backup for example (application present in 2210). It
can do such automated backups when properly configured in its settings
dialogs.

You have to back the device up to the storage card.

Sure it will. If you yank the batteries or let the built in batteries
completely die, it would wipe out all of the data.

You're right of course that a Palm that runs down its battery will have no
information left too. At least, my m505 never shows any information when I
start it up after not using it for a prolonged time.

But IIRC connecting it to your desktop would automagically restore your
complete setup. It's a feature I've always rather liked, and would like to
see in a Pocket PC too. With me, restoring my Pocket PC from a backup often
has strange sync side-effects like dual appointments (I guess due to a dual
partnership), which my Palm setup never had. Not that this prevents me from
backing up my iPAQ to my storage card, and restoring it on the road if
necessary. :)
