VGA - Gimmick or Goodie?

I'm a recent palm converter. When I heard about the new IPAQs, I
promptly returned my 1945 after hearing there will be no SE upgrade
available. Then I put an order in for a Dell X30 624mhz when I read
about VGA capabilities on SE. Since display resolution is of
paramount importance to me, I cancelled my Dell order so that I can
research more. I use my PDAs primarily to read ebooks, tech docs via
MS Reader and secondarily for the 'other' stuff, notes, calendar e.g.
Question is, will I be able to go full screen w/o scrolling in PIE, P
word, Acrobat Reader e.g. with 640x480 VGA on a 4" screen? Even in
landscape? $600 is alot of money approaching laptop prices. Comments
anyone?

I currently have a Palm Tungsten T3 and with Palms stance on upgrade to
Cobalt I will switch to a Windows Mobile device. Being that as it may, a
640X480 display is VERY tempting to me and that is why I am leaning towards
the new iPAQ hx4705. May not sound like much of a difference to most people
but that extra screen real estate can make a big difference to someone with
not so good vision.

As for you question about scrolling, it will depend a lot on what the
developer of a given web site has coded their page for. As tragic as it is,
most developers of web pages do not take into consideration what different
resolutions people are using. The defacto standard for most web sites these
days is 800x600. But sites designed for mobile devices should fit with a
lot of room to spare on the new screen. As for MS Reader, and other apps
like Pocket Word and Adobe, we will have to see how they or if they operate
in landscape mode. I may be wrong but Adobe still has not updated the
Acrobat reader for Palm OS to use the landscape features of the Tungsten T3.

And lastly, a lot of people are saying that the cost of the new PDA from HP
is almost the cost of a laptop. Sure, but what type of laptop are you
really going to get for $600. When you look at the built in WiFi,
Bluetooth, Compact Flash, SDIO, and the VGA display, I can see spending the
extra bucks for the 4705 as opposed to the Axim x30.

Now for me the question becomes what BT Phone to get? Any recommendations.
Specifically, which ones will WM2003SE work with, including and this is
important because Palm still has not learned this, the SMS feature between
the phone and the PDA. I want to be able to retrieve new messages off of
the phone and read them on the PDA. As well as send SMS and MMS messages
from the PDA through the phone. Does any of that make sense?

After using the Toshiba for testing I have to say that VGA is VERY nice to
have. The screen is the best looking that I have seen in a while. If you
use the default MS VGA settings there is a lot of wasted space that makes it
hard to see things in landscape mode, though I've not had an issue with
portrait mode.

If you use the hack to get to "true" VGA you get a lot more screen
real-estate to work with. I've got screenshots posted in our Forum under
the SE topic of both modes.

Even with the "Microsoft" mode you get more things on the screen than a
normal 240x320 display and I find it hard to use the smaller screens after
using the VGA one.
