USB-On-The-Go

Hi,

Can anyone tell me what plans MS has for releasing a version of
Windows for the PocketPC and/or Smartphone that has support for
USB-On-The-Go ? (Ideally a full master-side stack, but any interim
measures would be interesting too.)

Have MS committed in principal to this technology at this time does
anyone know ?

If not then does anyone know how to go about using already available
hardware as a master for a specific device under the current versions
of WinCE ? (I have a SPV C500 that I would like to connect as a
master to a GPS to allow saving of tracklogs etc to the C500's
internal MiniSD card). I need to be able to switch the slave side
stack off, and send data to the USB bus, etc

Thanks a lot for your time,

David

Hi,

If I understand the situation correctly, you cannot get there from here.

You need both software drivers (none exist, AFAIK) AND hardware changes to
support USB-On-The-Go. I have not heard of any platforms that actually have
the required hardware, either.

My questions were firstly about Microsofts' stated position wrt this
technology : are MS committed to supporting it in WinCE Smartphone /
PocketPC at some future date ? If so then what will be the nature of
that support ? (ie Full USB master stack / the minimum possible to
connect to a slave device / whatever ?)

Secondly, how can a single, specific device be interfaced to in the
absence of a USB master stack ? What are the issues relating to
slave-side USB interference etc ?

AIUI, the SPV C500 / HTC Typhoon / i-Mate SP3 Smartphone is based on
the OMAP730 : <http://www.slashphone.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1214&postcount=2>.

This chip has support for USB OTG :

Thanks again,

David

I'm sure you won't get an answer from Microsoft about that here. I suspect
(IMO) that Microsoft will support it, if and when the industry demands it.
The demand is nascent -- I'd like it, and there are lots of other "techie
types" who would, too. I don't know that we make up a market, though.

We may not get an answer here, but MS does have their wish list web page.
If everyone that posts to these PPC groups would go there and make our wants
heard on the officially, we might see native USB host support within the
next couple of iterations of WM. Unfortunately most manufacturers have
spotty upgrade support (ie. HP, Dell, Toshiba) so we'll all have to buy new
machines to get the technology.

You don't happen to know where that is do you ? I searched for "wish
list" and "product feature request" on their website but drew a blank.

Bit pessimistic for a developers' group :)
