This is not really a pocket pc question but I wouldn't mind a second opinion
from the readers of this group:-

windows XP:-

When I log onto windows it says that something about not being able to
locate the user profile and that it will load the default one. It then
counts down from 30 seconds until login. If I add another profile it then
logins without this message - but I don't want two users for a computer that
is used by one person. How do I solve this? Ideally I just want the computer
to load straight to the desktop with no need to login to windows.

The best place to go would actually be Microsoft and ask them what is
causing this problem. If you version of Windows is still within a certain
time frame they will help you. There is a way to log in without having to
select a user, but I can't remember how to do it right now and my help an
support window is not working correctly for me to look it up again. For
some reason I can't get it to search anything. If I figure anything out,
I'll come back here and let you know.

Ok...I figured it out....You can avoid having to log on at all and just have
the computer log you on by itself if you only have one user.....To do this
follow these step:

Open your Control Panel>
Click on User Accounts>
Once the User Account Window Opens,
Click "Change the Way Users Log on or Off">
Click on the box next to "Use the Welcome Screen" to take the check out of
it>
Click "Apply Options"

This should set your computer to not use the Welcome Screen and just take
you straight to Windows

You can use the MS Power Toy "TweakUI" to auto log on to an XP box...

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

Otherwise post to the microsoft.public.windowsxp.general news group...

Will what emededorp suggested work ? I don't want to add additional software
if necessary.

His suggestion would seem to solve the auto login problem but I am wondering
if there would still be a problem. The unable to locate message seems like
an error message of some kind. Is this user profile corrupt and needs
deleting and replacing? Is there a way to do this ? It is the first profile
I created when setting up the computer.

Hi Tiger

It sounds like the profile you have for your main user has been corrupted.
The profile holds your My Documents, Desktop and any personalised settings
for programs on your machine for that user.

If you have created a new user then a new folder will be created in
C:\Documents and Settings for this user. If you need anything from the My
Documents or Desktop, you should also find a folder for your old user in
there too. You can copy any files you need to the new user

If you want to logon to Windows XP without the login screen, do the
following

Click Start-Run and then type
control userpasswords2

There is a checkbox that says something about bypassing the Welcome Screen
(I can't see it on mine as I login to a domain) If you deselect the
checkbox, then it will ask for the username and password that you would like
to autostart with. Your machine should then go straight in without asking
for a password
