My HDD crashed this afternoon. I have a Dell Axim X-5, when I get my new PC
will the data on my PocketPC transfer to the new PC?

I am especially interested in the Contact information (addresses, telephone
numbers etc). About 90% of the data I have backups for, just not my
Outlook.pst file.

Thanks!

Yes you can use the data on the pocket pc to replace contacts and some other
data back onto your computer. The thing is when you install active sync on
your new system, active sync will ask if you want to replace data on the
mobile device with data from the computer, combine data from the computer
and mobile together or do nothing. You want to combine the data, this will
take information from the ppc and put it on the computer and info from the
computer to the ppc but since you won't have any info on the computer
everything will sync from the ppc to the desktop.

Strongly recommend that you run a backup to storage card on the ppc
_before_ you resync the first new connect.

While things are probably going to work as advertised, if they don't,
having a backup on memory card will give you as many tries as you need
to accomplish a pst restore.

Thanks so much for the information.

I assume I will have to use different partnership name when I get my new PC?

No you won't. The name restriction is on the PC which died. You will get a
question as to whether you want to only sync with the new PC or with more
than one. You can say just this PC. Saying more than one will retain the
partnership the PPC has with the old PC, which would be sort of useless. If
you do retain that partnership on the PPC, when you next try to partner with
a laptop or a work PC, essentially the third partnership, you will be asked
which of the two current ones you want to delete.

The same thing happened to me and the transfer of data went flawlessly on
my first synch after installing the new hdd + software .

I have now backed up my data card. Now not to beat a dead horse, but I want
to do it right. I have a few questions:

Does the version of active sync on the handheld have to be the same on the
PC?

What will happen to the programs on the handheld (such as City Time, Pocket
Stars, etc)?

I was using Outlook 98 on the old PC, I assume I should install Outlook
first on the new PC before I sync?

Again, thanks.

You should install Outlook before you install ActiveSync. The versions of AS
on the PPC and PC do not need to match. Good thing or most folks wouldn't be
able to sync since PC AS actually gets updated while the piece on the PPC
pretty much is what you got it with. Nothing will happen to the PPC
programs. If you have one like Adobe that installed extra conversion filters
on the desktop or Worldmate that installs it's own AS icon and conduit, that
would need to be reinstalled...but only to restore the desktop side. You
will find that in AS Add/Remove programs, all the PPC programs will be
listed that are on your PPC when you dock, but they will be grayed out. That
means the install files aren't on the PC anymore.

Well the sync to my new PC went well. All of my contacts transferred fine. I
do have another question. I have a backup of my PocketPC's My Documents
folder. What do I do with that? I noticed after I synced there is a PocketPC
My Documents folder under My Documents bet there was nothing in there.

Thanks All!
