How does memory work with Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition?

I have a Dell Axim X50v. I love the device but am noticing that I
hardly have any memory to run programs. I looked in the memory
settings and see that i have 2.73 MB free storage and 6.45 MB free for
programs. The device is supposed to have 64 MB memory.

I was thinking that the ROM had all of the memory needed to run the OS
and that the RAM was for additional programs.

I installed all of the programs that I added to the device onto the SD
memory card so......

Where is all of the memory going? and what can I do to tweak the memory
settings?

Thanks

Donna

If you use Internet Explorer on the device, the cache can take up a lot of
memory as you browse web sites. You can delete these files from I.E. if
thats the case.

I tried clearing my cache and also turning off running programs but
that didn't work either.

I am wondering how the memory actually works. I have noticed that
sometimes when you uninstall things they really don't uninstall.

I wish there was a registry cleaner for the mobile 2003 2nd edition.
or even a registry editor. I have tried to install that PHM editor but
it won't work with my processor: PXA260.
Blah....all this power but can't do much.

Apparently you are trying programs that do not unstall as they should, for
whatever reason. I would suspect that your device may be in a worse for
wear shape - sometimes it only takes one poorly written app to cause havoc
on these devices.

I would suggest that you do the following:
1. write down the programs you have installed that you use
2. hard reset the device
3. reinstall the programs from 1. above one at a time, trying the device
after installation to make sure you don't suddenly lose an excessive amount
of memory. I think it is from a bad uninstall, but cannot be sure without
more info.
4. make a backup to your storage card once you have your device at a happy
state.

Now, when you try other programs that will not release memory on an
uninstall, hard reset and restore it. Add to the backup as you find
programs you want to keep.

As for a registry editor look at Resco Explorer (www.handango.com) or these
freebies:

u can move the cache folder to sd card
first clear your cache, cookies n history using PPC-IE
u need a registry editing tool like 'PHM Registry Editor' (it's a freeware,
website http://www.phm.lu/products )
WARNING: backup your data first, any mistakes u need to do hard resetting
using the tools, goto
\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
u will find Cache, Cookies n History under Shell Folders
change the properties from 'Windows' to 'Storage Card'
restart your ppc n copy these folders from your rom (folder \profiles\....)
to sd card
done.

I will give that a try after I buy a faster SD card that can match closely
to the speed of main memory on my device. My main memory can run a video at
full speed/quality up to about 750 kbps. I don't know what speed SD cards
would have to be at to match that.

David you said you have "managements to keep my free memory around
26megs"

Do you do that using:
check notification
cleaner plus and
fastcleaner
I want to be able to do the same thing on my X50v.

Thanks

Cards can only go as fast as the memory card interface allows. You may
not see any advantage if you could get a 4000 x card over the way a 40
X card performs. And the 40X may just work at the same speed as a 20X
in your device.
The limiting factor is less the card and more your machine.
