I have the Ruksun and this program has not been updated for two years now.
It can download articles about 10 times faster than the Quesntsoft
NewsReader which I just purchased and it can handle attached pictures in
PPC2003 version and has a better front-end. I don't know why Quesntsoft
NewsReader is much slower than Ruksun. I think it tries to download the
body of the articles instead of just the headers.

Out of curiosity: could you describe what this one does better than the
others you've tried? I've been using them all for quite some time, and
NewsForce isn't exactly what I would call top of the bill. So I'm
curious what it is you like so much about it.

If there's one thing where Qusnetsoft Newsreader can make progress,
it's speed, that much is true. May be Rick Murray can step in, and
explain what he'd doing in this regard?

But since I do a lot of usenet reading on my Pocket PC, I'm always
looking for an application that can manage several newsgroups on
several servers, partially with usr:pass requirements, and leave me
with a workflow that I can feel at home with. With the older
newsreaders, like NewsForce and Inkspot, I always felt limited when
using them on my Pocket PC. With Qusnetsoft Newsreader, I have no
problem staying away from my desktop newsreader for a few days.

And the dealbreaker to me: both NewsForce and Inkspot have not been
really updated in years, even when there are still flaws in both. I am
betting my money on an app that is under development, and that has a
developer following this newsgroup closely, even solving end user
problems by this usenet group. :)

I agree with Marlof on this. Qusnetsoft Newsreader isn't the fastest but it
has worked well for me and allows me to do what I need without having to
access a desktop computer. Plus Rick has an active presence on the
newsgroup so that's a plus.

I have found that if you pack the database frequently and also check "Delete
read during pack" in Settings > Misc, Qusnetsoft Newsreader is much faster.
YMMV if you are subscribed to several newsgroups and leave more messages on
your PPC. In my case this is the only newsgroup I frequent.

My problem with the two softwares in question:

1. NewsForce hasn't been updated since 2001, and has UI glitches in Pocket
PC 2002 and further. It is definitely a platform abandoned by the
developers.

2. Qusnetsoft: I liked the software when I managed to install it once. Since
then, all my trials to install it fail. The program install, but halts every
time I try to download the content of a newsgroup. In 3 different devices. I
can't understand what I have been doing wrong, but I have given up.

All the above is true, but I didn't like the way the change was made from
free to pay.

The free version was withdrawn some time before the commercial version came
out, with no reson being given. Then when you upgrade the database in the
new version, it makes the free version unusable. Not too slick. Wasn't it
once stated that Qusnetsoft would always be free?

I'm now using A4Pocket Newsreader, which is much quicker and easier to use
anyway. YMMV.

I found that Qusnetsoft had a problem with the "Default Encoding"
setting. If I changed it to US-ASCII, I had similar problems. Usually it
wouldn't sync, and the rest of the time it would lock up the PPC.

If I left the "Default Encoding" at the default setting, everything
worked OK. You can see the thread initiated by me in this newsgroup back
on 12 December 2004. More details are in that thread.

How do you avoid reading the same messages twice if you use a desktop
newsreader and the PPC newsreader to view the same newsgroups?

You can't. That would require newsreaders to synchronize each other, which
they can't do. JPinOH

That's been my experience, too. I did find one way to make it work, but
it only worked if you read on *one* of the machines between syncs. I
simply saved my .mbox files from the desktop newsreader in a folder that
synced with my PPC. Then I used those same .mbox files in an offline PPC
newsreader (I can't recall which one -- NewsForce, perhaps?). It was
cumbersome enough that I stopped using that method.

Yes, just to add to Jon G's post, this DEFINITELY speeds it up, to the point
that it is faster than pocket outlook. Of course, you lose the read
messages on your device, but you can always pull them another way. To be
honest I have not found the need for referral within the time frame that I
would want to keep on the device, and google is free for those I do... the
laptop will have a copy, anyways.

You can also check "pack during sync" if you are visiting a populous
newsgroup, which, together with the above, empties out the read posts
everytime you sync. The lists load quite well then, instead of hiding the
read posts but still being forced to sift through them.

I normally just remember the time and date of the last post I read. Pretty
cryptic but it works for me.

Can't and don't are two different things. It wouldn't be too difficult a
matter to create newsreaders for the PPC and the desktop machine that would
use the same .newsrc, or its equivalent. You would be synchronizing one
file.

Dan,
I've tried NewsForce and I wasn't really impressed. It wouldn't thread
properly or AT ALL in some groups.
A4 pocket reader would constantly lock up my ipaq 1945 and that was
irritating
I'm not even going to look twice at offline newsreader (I want to sync from
my lazy chair)
I installed InkSpot 1.15 and I think it's the best one out of all listed
here. Here's why.
*wireless sync
*configurable database size and location
*proper threading
*feature rich
*encoding is error free
*new compression feature is zippy fast
TRY IT...

Same here. Usually when I have both my PPC and my notebook available again
I just do a last sync with the one I worked on last, and with the new one,
and mark the newsgroup read on the new one. Then I pick it up from there.
