Is free WiFi widespread

How widespead is free WiFi coverage in (let's say) California, Nevada and
Britain?

I am thinking about buying a £60 card for when in USA but if coverage is so
limited or you have to stop for coffee each time (!) and spend 20 mins
connecting it all up then I can't be bothered with it. Nor would I want to
pay £5 per day like some zones/places charge.

I did read that 1 or 2 streets in San Francisco will have wifi for anyone to
use. But it this true in reality.

But those are for Centrino based notebooks - will a wi-fi equipped PDA be
able to connect?

Yes. Centrino is just a platform that Intel developed integrating the CPU,
wireless adapter, motherboard and other components. It uses standard
wireless LAN (Wi-Fi), just the same as your PDA or any other computer.
