HTC Hero Slowness

A few months back, I bought an HTC Hero to replace the iPhone I used to have that went all fritzy on me and broke. The Sprint HTC Hero is a pretty powerful phone, but I've found that the GUI is just so achingly slow and there doesn't seem to be much I can do to speed it up to what would be comfortable for me.

More than that, the battery life is miserable. Is it just that the iPhone operating system spoiled me, or is anyone else having similar issues with their HTC Hero phones?
