Can you make an EVO a hotspot without paying $30/m?

I like the features on the EVO phone, but I refuse to pay the $30 a month to have them turn on the wifi hotspot feature. Is there a way to turn this on without paying for the priviledge?

I have been informed that this is possible, but I havent done it nor would I know how to, but if you take a look at xda developers forums there are plenty of useful threads that could probably give you a step by step guide
