Droid 2.3.4 issues with MS Exchange based e-mail

I got a new Droid 3 Global and I'm trying to figure out what to do to get e-mail to sync with the device. I want it so it leaves a copy on the server for Outlook to download while I can access the e-mail on the phone. After several calls to Verizon and browsing their support forums looking for the answer I found this:

Your problem is perhaps is being caused by your Exchanges SSL certificate being "self-signed". Droid version 2.3.4 does not play nice with email servers that do not have third party certificates installed and if your Excvhange server is Exchange 2010 then this will be especially true. I had this problem with my phone and if spilled over into issues connecting not just with ActiveSync but with IMAP and POP regarding the Exchange server in question. I run my own Exchange so I went ahead and purchased a third party cert, installed it and all was well. I wrote a shor blog about it here: http://sharkpc.blogspot.com/2011/08/fyi-microsoft-exchange-activesync-imap.html

Can someone point me in some direction to figure out how to get this to work properly? I guess I am not understanding this very well.

Also, what would be the best app that would allow me to automatically sync my Outlook contacts with my DROID device?

1st part certification is if the company that hosts your email gives itself a certificate. 3rd party is when they have someone else do it. Read the blog.

I only use stock email and gmail not mse on the phone. I remember seing a few apps in market with mse capabilities though.
