up to 14 percent increase in performance. its substantial.

i personally have an unlocked and heavily overclocked 6950. my point of concern for you is that you would have to use a 6970 bios. the 6970 is very closely related to the 6950, with a couple key differences. the most important difference is that an entirely different type of ram is used in a 6970. when u use the bios of a 6970 on a 6950, you are over volting the ram. I havent looked too deeply into tbh, but theres definately word of dead cards floating around.

edit: also worth noting ver.2 6950s do not unlock (mostly.)

Unless your card is one of the first 6950s released, unlocking it to a 6970 is no longer an option. AMD put an end to that with the latest 6950s to hit the market. Also, as far as overclocking is concerned, I would not recommend messing around in the bios unless you absolutely know what you are doing. But if you are determined to overclock, you can overclock some using amd overdrive in your catalyst control center, or you can download msi afterburner and overclock that way. In my opinion that is the only way to overclock as far as beginners are concerned.

With that said, I wouldn't overclock if I was you. I can understand your desire to want the most out of your card, but really you have plenty already and unless you are playing flight sims or battlefield 3, I would wait on the overclocking.

Just my opinion.

ha. depends on how much of a risk taker you are.

personally ive gone to 1 ghz on the gpu and 1450 on the ram. this is really the high end of the spectrum and im not stable there.

currently im at 950/1350. stable. see what works for you. you should be ok as long as you dont touch the voltage and dont set it at anything too crazy.
