Samsung S5 can not access mobile network. Can not make phone calls at all. Can only access internet and send/receive texts wifi. Once got sim card error. This problem started coincident with battery problems where phone heats up, cycles on and off and battery drains fast. Put in new battery but problems persisted. Heating and cycling appears resolved after holding power and volume up buttons, however battery still drains fast.

Solution
Well a SIM you shouldn't have to pay for. Check with your carrier/service provider. Most will replace a SIM. At least the major ones. The lack of cloud access would still be the service, which could be the SIM not getting what it should, or the carrier has trouble in that area.
You need to talk to your carrier/service provider about the lack of service part. The new battery you got, was it OEM or aftermarket? If the latter, that can be part of your problem. They are kind of hit or miss.

Also, depending on what apps you have on the device, they can massively drain a battery. Especially if you are like a lot of people and don't actually 'close' an app when not actively using it and don't restart (turn off and back on) the phone very often. This leaves your phone with less an less free resources and will drain a battery faster and fast.

And you should check the phone for viruses and malware as well. they can cause the battery drain and can be the initial cause of some overheating issues to to their abuse of the device.

In regards to overheating, you would really need to have someone look at it to test where the heat is actually coming from.

Thank you webworkings. The lack of mobile phone/data service is probably not the fault of Verizon but something with the phone. Tried to back up via cloud and got message that it could not connect to cloud and to check the sim card. Battery was OEM. I do shut apps and turn phone off at least overnight. Do not know how to check for viruses. No repair places nearby. THink I will try to buy a sim card at Bestbuy.

Verizon tech support over the phone detected no problems with the phone, including sim card. Signal nonexistent in home but weak signal detected outdoors. Due to weak signal, he helped me set up phone via WIFI. Need to check that phone/internet works via the mobile network in other locations where signal is presumably stronger
