Can't format a micro sd card

I bought a brand new 8gb micro sd card & adapter. when I try to format it "windows was unable to complete the format" appears. what do I do?

What brand of micro SD card is it, SanDisk, Samsung, or some cheapy one from Ebay? It may have also got damaged in transit, therefore making it unreadable in Windows. Also, if you have another windows system in your house, try formatting it on that, if that doesn't work, and as it is readable by Windows, then it could be corrupt, it could be just the case of installing recovery software and bringing back the partition table of the Micro SD card, therefore making it able to be used. Also, what is your intended purpose for it? Is it for an android phone? If so, then try it on that and if it is not detected, then just send it back to where you purchased it from and say that it didn't work. Hope this helps with your issue.
