Using HDMI cable on my new monitor

When I use a HDMI cable on my monitor, it only shows the desktop wallpaper and I can't seem to click on anything. When I use a VGA cable, there isn't any issue at all. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? Thanks!

check in the menu for cable source or something like that on the monitor. make & model# of the monitor? did you read the monitor manual even if on disk?
