I've been using power director and taking some 3d video.

It seems the GPU requirements are pretty minimal to stitch and product short 3d videos at 2k (128mb discrete).

I have a R9 270x and satisfied with performance.

I'm assuming I would see no real gains by obtaining a beefier GPU and would only need to go up to an Rx480 or Nvidia 1080 if I wanted to consumer VR through Oculus Rift of HTC Vive

Am I correct or way off?

You will need to see if your software takes advantage of the GPU in the processing / rendering.
Depends the version, etc...

A quick google search says, yes.

Here is the Info you need:
What is CUDA:
"CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) is a parallel computing platform and programming model created by NVIDIA and implemented by the graphics processing units (GPUs) that they produce."

Does PowerDirector Support CUDA? = YES
