Why do I need to create a tethered connection when I have stated that both are already on the same wifi?

I am wanting to watch movies from my Android Smartphone on my laptop without having to connect any wires. They are both connected to my home wifi network and working. Do I need a program or is there someway to set it up?

You should be able to watch them direct on the laptop, if it is already connected to the internet, without needing to go through the phone, so I am curious as to why want to go through phone?
