An 8350 will do it, but I wouldn't recommend anything below it. You can also consider Intel.

If I'm not mistaken I believe u have to have a intel core i5 6400 CPU and above for it to run smooth. I think on either intels site or oculus it'll tell u what CPU u can use.

According to Oculus it's an i5 4590, but take that with a grain of salt. It also says an i7 2600k isn't supported, but it's more than capable of doing so.

None of them are ideal, but for a budget builder that really wants to try that technology, it will work at 75fps+ at high settings....which is where it needs to be without causing VR sickness. My 8350 @ 4.6 with one of the Fury X's did just fine (though of course not as well as the 5930k).

Hello, i have AMD FX 8300, stock speed, and a EVGA GTX 980 Classified, stock speed too, the result in Steam VR Test is Very High , i get 9 points, HTC Vive is working perfect, no lags, its smooth, working perfect, befor i buy the VR set, i have doubts about it wil or work or not, but ist working great,

Amd FX 8300 , no overclock, Aftermaket Cooler AIR
EVGA GTX 980 Clsassified
Corsair 16 GB RAM 1866 Mhz
CRUCIAL BX100 SSD
MOBO ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0

No. Running tests using 3Dmark, the only way to get my 8320 FX series chip to score a VR ready mark was to overclock it to 4.8Ghz+. Coupled with my R9 380, this gives me a score of 22.8k - VR ready .

The 8300 is unfortunately a weaker chip in regards to single core performance. You might be able to be VR ready if you overclock it 5Ghz +. That's a big MIGHT.

Edit: because you have a 980ti, you should be o.k. I would recommend upgrading your CPU when you can though.
