I just bought a used Dell Precision M4600 with the following specs Intel Core i7 2860QM CPU 8GB Ram 320GB HDD NVIDIA Quadro 1000M DVD drive.

When the laptop arrives I am going to upgrade it with 16gb of ddr3 sodimm memory I have laying around. As the laptop only has the base NVIDIA Quadro 1000M card I am looking into upgrading the graphics card. however as this laptop is almost 5 years old I can not find a upto date list of compatible graphics cards as current info is confusing and incomplete.
So I am asking for anybody that has or has had a dell m4600 and has experience with the graphics cards used with it to list all the cards with any special requirements to make a certain card work. So there is a collection of data for the m4600 for the future.

From my research the m4600 is compatible with only mxm A boards ie quadro 1000m 2000m firepro m4000 m5950 m5100 and radeon 6700m. The best possible confirmed working card is the firepro m5100 from my research. I bought this laptop and should receive it soon. Boards such as the quadro 3000m 4000m 5000m 5010m ect firepro m6000 m6100 m8900 are mxm B boards and are not compatable with the m4600 but are compatible with the m6600 ect. In short many if not all of these boards will physically fit in the laptop but only the first six mentioned will work. Go with the m5100 5fxt3 model number. I also bought a m5100 will confirm for personal certainty soon. Also it is highly advisable to buy an amd heat sync because the layout is different between amd and nvidia cards. Plug and play issues switching from nvidia to amd or amd to nvidia are unknown.
