hdmi doesn't work off motherboard, but does off graphics card

I have built a pc. There is an hdmi port for the motherboard and also one for the graphics card. When I boot using the hdmi off the graphics card I can get a video signal. But when I use the hdmi port off the motherboard I get "no video signal".

because the videocard over rides the onboard video. check in the bios to see if can enable both onboard & videocard so as to use both at same time.
