Can a camera app improve your picture's quality?

I recently installed Candy Camera on my Galaxy S2 and am quite impressed that the quality of my pictures seems to improve when I take pictures using the application. Colours look much more lively and it also seems as if the image is a lot smarter. Is this actually true or is it just appearance? I have no technical knowledge whatsoever so please inform

If it looks better to your eyes, and the picture is for you, then it's an improvement. IMHO, and I'm sure someone will correct me, it's subjective.
