why doesn't my sd card fit into my android phone?

I bought an sd card after I realized the android phone I bought didn't have any more room on it. I didn't download anything, not even a picture and it ran out of space. I bought the sd card, tried to slip it into the side of the phone where the sd card would go and it doesn't go all the way in. Is there another type or size sd card that I need?
