Which model iPad do you have?

Depending on which one you have, it may be due to the lock switch or a button you pressed in Control Center.

If you have an iPad 2, iPad (3rd generation), iPad (4th generation), iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini 2 or iPad mini 3, there's a switch just above the volume button that may be set to lock rotation.

If you have an iPad Air 2, you may have locked it from Control Center. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access it, and look for this button:

If it's on, shut it off.
