Recovering lost photos

When trying to transfer pictures from old phone to new phone using a USB cord, I received an error when trying to move them. When I looked at my phone to make sure I had the right setting, it showed that I had no pictures in the phone. I had over 1500 pictures, so I know they were there LOL. Anyway, now it is showing that there are no files in the gallery, none are showing in my file manager. I had an LG G2 on Verizon. Is there a way to recover these, or are they gone forever?
