GPU problem or just driver?

My HP-G42 with AMD Mobility Radeon HD5000 GPU Laptop have just have a series of BSOD saying atikmpag.sys failed or something like that. So I updated the drivers from the AMD website but now it frequently displays " AMD display driver stopped responding and has recovered". . when I disabled it in Device Manager, it somehow disappeared. Is this a hardware or software problem.

Im running on Windows 8.1 64-bit.

For laptops, use the latest version of driver provided by the laptop manufacturer, not the GPU manufacturer. After this, refer the answer in http/www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1656824/atikmdag-sys-error-bsod-startup.html (but this is for PC)
