Calling Kurtis: Help needed for Pioneer D701

Hi!

I just plugged in my D701 to spin up a few old LD's.

The trusty unit works fine when playing the LD's, but when I put in a CD, it
shows "CD" on the display and refuses to play it.

I can hear the unit spin up the disc, but it stops shortly after and doesnt
read the TOC or give the CD time on the display.

I have checked and cleaned the lens, and watching from the side (with the
lid off) i can't see the laser "pumping" up and down trying to read it....it
just sits in the fully up position. (like it has max. focus offset)

Anything I can try? or is it likely to be a spindle motor not getting the
disc up to speed? Unit worked perfectly last time I used it.

There are two usual causes. First would be that the spindle motor/laser
centering alignment shifted or may have always been close to the edge of the
window and the motor needs to be recentered. This is the easier one.

The other is the laser itself aging. It may have slightly aged so that
recentering would fix it or the signal is too weak to play the CD. Analog
LD audio and video does not require as strong as a signal as digital audio.
Put in a laserdisc and see if you get both Analog and Digital sound by
switching between them. If the laser is weak you will get Analog sound but
not the Digital sound.

Let me know what happens.

I'm going to watch this thread closely, as my old LD player has the same
symptoms, but it still plays LDs using the digial audio fine.
