Hey all this is the first time I have run into this problem and not
sure what it is, i use a pioneer M-401 and the movie i was watchin is
the boyfriend. Anyway there was no problems for the first 20minutes
of side one then the problem started, whenever someone spoke(Usually
when it was a womans voice) A loud crackling noise would start, very
anoying and made the movie unwatchable. Is this a form of laser rot?
There is no visual distortion mind you. Any insight would be greatly
appreciated!

If you are getting crackling of sound but the video is good then the signal
from the laser is getting weak. The digital audio will degrade before the
picture. Other chances are something in the digital audio circuit going
bad.
