Hi,

What is the verdict in the comparison between the dvl700 versus cld704 ???

I already have a 704 but am not very impressed (smearing issues).
And is the 700 capable of playing DTS dvd's????

The DVL-700 does not provide DTS Audio for DVD's. The machine two series
before the 704 do not smear as much, 702 and the Elite CLD-97. If you have
a few thousand the HLD-X9 has no smear.

You may want to try a Panasonic LX-900U as it also does not smear but it has
a Video AGC circuit set so the machine raises the video level during dark
scenes, could bother you if you are picky, it also did not come with AC-3
standard.

Okay, a completely pedantic post, but here goes...

Well, that's not technically true, since most DTS DVDs have at least a
DD 2.0 audio track (and most have a DD 5.1 track), which is presumably
playable on the DVL-700.

I assume that the original question was whether the DVL-700 can play
the DTS track of a DTS DVD, which apparently, it can't.
Just trying to clear things up a bit!

The DVL-700 Has less smearing at most almost none at all.
It is 100% Dolby Digital 5.1 compatiable.But as to DTS Some DVL-700's will
decode DTS through the coaxial digital output.
I have the second Gen. of the DVL-700 and it does do DTS but My first Gen.
of the DVL-700 will not.SO inclosing it is a hit and miss as to witch of
the DVL-700 can do it.Also with out a DTS capable Reciver it won't do you
any good anyways.

Any LaserDisc player can pass (not decode) a DTS signal to a decoder as long as
it has a digital output, be it SP-DIF coaxial or TOSLink. As for the Dolby
Digital RF signal, again, as you state, the DVL-700 is capable of that although
you still need an outboard RF demodulator to play the Dolby Digital track.

This assumes LaserDiscs.

For DVD playback, it can only pass Dolby Digital but not DTS. - Reinhart
