TiVo Desktop (Mac OS X) now works with AAC. AAC is the default file
format for iTunes/iPods. There is a new TiVo Desktop client (version
1.9), and you need to install a real-time LAME transcoder.

The result is that AAC files are transcoded on the fly to MP3 format as
they're being played by the TiVo. This is fairly transparent as now
all AAC files in iTunes show up with TiVo, and play just fine.

The real-time LAME transcoder does consume additional cpu cycles on the
Mac, but the new TiVo Desktop 1.9 is a lot more efficient than 1.8, so
it ends up not being a significant drain overall.

Now for the love of God, if we could only get TiVo To Go to work on Mac
OS X!!! Who do we have to blow to get it to work with
iDVD...oooh...with a new TiVo based theme!

You can get the new TiVo Desktop 1.9 for OS X at:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19036

If you read the comments, you'll see info about getting AAC to work.
Essentially you just install TiVo Desktop 1.9 and then install this:
LAME 3.96.1 for Darwin (binary only - 2.76MB disk image)

Installation is much easier than the instruction seem to indicate. The
package installer does the right thing, you don't have to know anything
about directory structures to install.

Just use the TiVo link:

I'd recommend *not* using the TiVo link. By using the VersionTracker link,
you end up getting valuable user comments.

The difference is that according to TiVo, you can't play AAC songs in your
iTunes library. TiVo very prominently states this but as indicated in the
comments on VersionTracker, there is a workaround that allows this.

Likewise there are interesting comments regarding various versions of OS X.
TiVo states 10.2 or later, but various people are reporting problems or
complete failure with 10.2.8

The file on VersionTracker was submitted by TiVo, so it's the same file, but
placed in a much better context.
