Well, I finally changed out the cable on my Atari 400 on the advice of
a lurker here who said that you can just open it up and unplug the old
one, and sure enough, that was the case.

First, I took all the screws out of the unit, and carefully took it
apart. Then, I unplugged the original RF cable (which was wound and
wound inside the machine, apparantly to protect against being pulled
too hard accidentally. Great job they did, I must say.

Second, I took an alcohol swab and cleaned the socket real good, and
re-inserted a BRAND NEW cable and closed it back up.

Perhaps it's lack of foresight, perhaps I wasn't paying attention, but
the "new" cord I installed was only a 6-foot cord. The old cord I took
out was REALLY, REALLY LONG, at least 10 feet I think. So while the
unit works great, and the picture is a lot clearer now, the RF cord is
kinda SHORT.. I can't move the unit all that far away from the TV now.

It's not too bad, I guess, but what do you think, should I go and buy a
longer cord and open the unit yet again to replace it, or just leave
the 6 FT cord in and leave well enough alone??

Well let me rephrase the question: what would you do, leave the 6FT
cord on there, or open it back up and put a longer cord on? Thanks.

Take it out and replace it; it's not hard nor risky.
