Tivo H/D Replacement

I've got a 40 gig Tivo that got fried in a storm. Tech mentioned that it's
the HD. Does anybody have an idea of how big a drive I can put in this?

Depends on software, but any will take up to 120GB. And I'd look for a
5400rpm model. Quieter and less heat. I assume you have a backup image and
know how to load it on the new drive.

If you do not have a backup image, can you get one some where on the net?

Sounds more like a burned out power supply and modem.
Those are on the front line when it comes to electrical storms.
If the power line from the street gets hit then there is a good chance
the phone line got hit with a surge also.(assuming the phone line is
connected)
Unless you can install these items yourself (they are available) then
it's worth the effort. If you cannot then you might consider a new one.

Yes you can (well, you can buy a drive with an image on it, I don't know
about downloading an image), and I'm not sure that you're limited to 120
(137) GB with any OS version now. So to answer the OP's question, "as big
as you want", IIRC. Going off memory, the newer ones have large-drive
support built in, and the older ones can get it via kernel patch/upgrade.
Google the Hinsdale FAQ, which should be updated to include new larger drive
info, if you have a backup image. If not, see upgrade drives at
www.weaknees.com . And of course, there's the usual suspects, like
www.tivocommunity.com and www.dealdatabase.com .

I have 2 Series 2 Tivos with the latest software load. In both
systems, I have installed 250 GB drives without any problems. And
I've been using them both for about 4 months (roughly)

Thanks for all the input but, not knowing which component fried and not
having a backup image, I opted for a new unit from Best Buy ( I knew that
gift card would come in handy). Now I've got something to get that backup
from and can play with the fried unit. I've already got a hd to install and
the power supply is cheap enough if I need it so, thanks again
