Copy TIVO Movies to PC?

My TIVO doesn't have a DVD recorder. Is it possible to copy the
movie/show files from the TIVO's HDD to my PC (linux/Win) and watch them
in something like MPlayer? I don't want to modify the TIVO's software.

In case it would matter, I am using a Toshiba SDH400...

I'm not sure which model that is, but if it's a SA tivo you can do it
the legit way, using Tivotogo. The files are encrypted, and are
therefore very slow to transfer (compared to the hacked system) but you
can burn DVDs.

I would suggest at least reading up on the hack. It's quite trivial
these days (or, I should say, involves a steep learning curve putting
up with dealdatabase, but only a couple hours of actual work on the
box.)

You are supposed to get a software upgrade this year for TiVoToGo which will
allow you to do this. Without doing anything but waiting.

It matters greatly.

You can't do what you want without modifying the TiVo software.

I received a message about it, but it says that I would need to pay for
the advanced service.

Ah. TiVo Basic is a very very very restricted version of the TiVo service.
In which case the answer to your question is an easy one...yes, it is
possible. You get this and many other features with the full TiVo service.

Correct. It's only included in the Premium service. You, I gather from
your post, are only using the TiVo Basic, and that is not an included
feature.

The other way to get it to your PC is in real time using a video capture
card, but would take a quality hit.

But only on SA TiVo models with compatible software.
The version of TivoToGo compatible with Toshiba SDH400 has not been
released yet. Expected later this summer.

This is not true, I have had TTG on my SD-H400 for a few months. It's
the models with DVD *recorders* that have not received the software yet
(SD-H400 is a player only).

I stand corrected.
