S-l-o-w TiVo

I have a Sony SVR-3000, which originally came with TiVo software version
3.2. The speed with which menus popped up, including the channel grid and
TiVo menu were acceptable -- less than a second delay, though not quite
instantaneous. Then, after time, the menus became slower and slower, and
I'm not sure if it's because I've saved more material on the HD or perhaps
after some software upgrades such as version 4.0. A couple months ago,
version 7.1b was installed, and I noticed a huge degradation in menu speed.
I'd hit the TiVo button, and it would sometimes take 5+ seconds for anything
to pop up, so I basically sit there not knowing if it knows I pushed the
button or not. Navigating through menus has about a second pause, and it's
just all very annoying. My question is: does anyone think if I archive some
of the TiVo'ed stuff onto DVD, it would help with the menu speed? I don't
want to waste the time to do it if it's completely unrelated. Right now, my
unit is filled to the point where I can only record about 1.5 - 2 hours of
highest quality material.

Very frustrating -- my poor TiVo is now at a stage of being barely
useable...

Yep...this is a major issue being discussed over at tivocommunity.com.
Prett sad when you hit Now Playing and it takes 10 seconds to draw the
menu.

I was having this problem with my tivo-branded s2, except because
it was recording suggestions the drive was completely full. I
dumped maybe 6 hours worth of basic recording (5%) and didn't see
much improvement, until I hit it with a restart. Not an
unplugging, just a soft-boot restart. Now it's back to full drive
and reacting like greased lightning.
