Hi,
Is there a way to burn shows from my playlist to the DVD burner on
my laptop? I see a USB port on the back of my Tivo box. Thanks a
million!

Which doesn't answer his question. Yeesh peeople, if you're gonna reply at
least add something informative.

No, the USB port on the back of unti will not let you plug a DVD recorder
into it and magically record discs. There's no software built-into the Tivo
that understands how to a) recognize the DVD recorder and b) handle the
setup of shows to burn on to one. Yes, the Tivo's with DVD recorders have
that software but it's not built-into the standalone Tivo units. Likewise
the DVDR units use an IDE connection to the drive not the slower USB port.

For now if you want to record from your current Tivo you can use the 'save
to vcr' functionality with a standalone DVD burner. I use a Philips DVDR600
with mine and it works great. Sure, it's a little more tedious that how
nicely a DVDR Tivo would handle it but I can live with it (for now).

You know, if you are going to criticize other responses, you should read
the original message. Also, you should give _correct_ information.

The original poster asked about "to the DVD burner on my laptop".

To the OP: yes, it is possible. Depending on which model you have, it
may even be relatively easy. You didn't say which model TiVo you have
though.

You said you have USB, so you have a Series2 type box. You presumably
don't have a TiVo with an integrated DVD burner (or the question would
be pointless). Is this a DirecTV DVR with integrated TiVo or a
stand-alone TiVo?

If it is a stand-alone, all you need to do is learn about TiVoToGo at
www.tivo.com. You'll need a supported USB network adapter for your
TiVo, the TiVo Desktop software for your laptop (presuming your laptop
is a Windows based system; nobody else is supported at this time), and
some DVD burning software. TiVo recommends the Sonic software, but you
can use other software (Google is your friend). Most Series2 TiVos are
supported by TiVoToGo; support for the rest is supposed to come this
summer.

If your TiVo is a DirecTV DVR, the only direct way you can do what you
ask is to hack your TiVo. I haven't done this (don't have a DirecTV
DVR), but again, Google is good (I head www.dealdatabase.com has the
info necessary). There are also hacks to make older TiVos network
enabled so that you can copy video off over the network.

Yes, the info is there, but it may be like trying to drink from a fire
hose. I'd go to http://alt.org/wiki/index.php/TivoHackingLinks first.

Of course there is one other way, that is to feed the very good
quality S-Video Analog Signal to a capture device attached or
built into his laptop. (The sound too of course.)

Another would be to feed the S-Video to a Standalone DVD
Recorder and use RW Disks to bring it to the laptop.
Refurbished units cost about the same as a good capture card/
USB2 box.

Check out www.videohelp.com for listings and user comments
on the related hardware and software.

Luck;

I have to say, I don't blame Howard for his response Bill, this guy has
spent absolutely zero effort to find any information on his own. If it
was my post I might have pointed him to a Tivo-to-go specific page and
maybe a hacking link (though I doubt someone who won't take the effort
to search these forums or the Tivo site before asking a question is
going to take the time necessary to learn how to hack the box), but
that's about it. For general questions like this, I think it's
appropriate to point them to the official site and then tell them to
come back with *specific* questions. This is ground that has been gone
over so many times it's creating a trench!

Amazingly, it does.

Which was not his question.

Or use TiVoToGo, which www.tivo.com does a horrible, horrible job of hiding
information about.

The exact intent behind pointing OP to where the answer is covered very very
well.

Yep, I had the same idea when I saw the OP. I don't think we need to
explain topics that are explained clearly on Tivo's website, just point
them to it (though I might have been a bit more specific). If a poster
*still* has specific questions, then it's fair game.

But if he can use TivoToGo, why would he do this? It's much slower
(real time of course).

Well, if one were to go the standalone route, might as well get a DVD recorder
with hard drive, so you can just edit on that machine. That's what I did.
Many people on avsforum.com's DVD recorder section ended up doing that after
trying the "record to computer" route too. Basically it's a lot simpler.
Sure, the end result DVDs aren't as fancy as one could do on a personal
computer, but I don't think most people wan to spend THAT much extra time.

Well if the OP would tell us if he had a Stand Alone or a DirecTivo we all
could help him better.

Very true, if we could get everyone to agree what the difference between
SA and non-SA is. Unfortunately some have introduced confusion by
insisting that it's something different then the rest of us (including
you, obviously) agree upon.
