How does a tivo change channels?

Hi, all. This is the one thing that's really preplexing me. How does a
tivo go about changing channels if you tell it to record something on
channel a then channel b? Does it use something like the IR Blaster (or
are they using the IR Blaster itself)? Also, I'm wondering how reliably
that works. I talked to my cable provider (Cox communications, I'm out in
Tucson, Az) and had a rep say IR Blasters don't work with the newer boxes,
but that just seems silly (I mean, if you can program them to work with a
Universal Remote...). Although I can imagine cox sabbotaging whatever
tivo's use to change channels, thereby making their PVR that much more
desirable... Anyway, TIA :).

They provide a serial cable for the few cable boxes that are so equipped,
but other than that, it's the IR blaster. Mine works flawlessly, until
someone dusts and forgets to replace the nodes, then bitches "HOW COME I
CAN'T GET ANYTHING BUT THE SCI-FI CHANNEL????"

I use the supplied serial cable with a Motorola DCT2000 cable box. Works
awesome. Never had a channel "misfire". Also depends if the cable company
disables the serial port on its boxes. Luckily mine doesn't.
