I wish TiVo would list the bugs fixed in this release somewhere. I've been
waiting since 7.1a came out for a fix to a problem I discovered and reported.
They promised the next release, but the fix wasn't in 7.1b.

Cool! And my rates haven't gone up, therefore the new features are free and
I can cancel my subscription and hack them! #######

I signed up for priority download for all 3 of my Tivos, and as of today
they have all been upgraded to 7.2, and for the first time my 540 series 2
changed channels without 5-10 seconds of pixilated noise. I am so pleased!

What was the problem?

I got 7.2 last night. Also via the priority list. And the GoToTivo
function works fine although not quite how I expected--better actually.
Once turned on there is an entry at the bottom of the Now Playing list
for the pc running desktop--inside that is a list of all .MPG, .MPEG,
and .TIVO files in the Tivo download directory (sub folders below that
are not seen). If you select one it is not played from there as I
expected but is actually transferred BACK to Tivo and appears in the Now
Playing list (and it can be watched as it's transferring if your network
is fast enough). The .TIVO files come back with all the info the
original had including show name (and will drop into existing groups if
appropriate), recording quality, time etc. MPG comes back always as a
standalone show with unknown quality and current date/time. All in all
I'd say it is exactly what folks were asking for.

I got 7.2 overnight, and tested the PC-to-TiVo feature this morning.
Similar results, except transfer was extremely slow, took about 5
minutes to transfer a 12-second test file. Also, I was unable to change
the "Keep Until" setting, I believe the error was msg 86.

It's still a nice feature, remains to be seen how much I'll actually use
it.

I didn't have that speed problem--the test files were watchable on Tivo
while transferring so it had to have been at least real time. I just
tried to change the keep date and got the 86 error also.

Yep, TivoCommunity is reporting the 86 error is appearing if you attempt
to change the keep until on MPG files but NOT on .TIVO files. Looks
like a bug.

I've gotten much better speeds on 3 other transfers, slightly slower
than real time so it occasionally catches up when playing back during
transfer. Of 4 transfers, the 2 short test files will not allow me to
change the "keep until" setting, 2 longer files *did* allow me to change
the setting: 1 self-shot video I had transferred from video camera to
mpg-2 to author to dvd, and one .avi converted to mpg-2. I have not yet
tried a .TiVo file.

Hmm... I got 7.2 downloaded 2 days ago, but not yet installed.... the
Settings, Phone and Network screen shows "Pending Restart" or "Awaiting
Restart" or something similar. When I do a restart from the online menu, I
get the TiVo guy on an orange background with the caption "Installing
service updates.. this may take a few minutes". Yeah, like 180 minutes!

Yet after TiVo became available, the "Pending Restart" signal still was
there, and software level was still 7.1b. I went through this process 2 more
times. Finally I unplugged the unit, waited about 5 mins, then powered on
again. Orange TiVo guy has been on the screen for 1 hr 20 minutes now, and
still counting.

How long is this update supposed to take? And is there any other way I was
supposed to restart the unit?

Mine took about 20 minutes, from restart to ready.

Hmm... Mine cranked away for 3 hours, then I gave up and went to bed. This
morning TiVo was working again - it did an update and recorded from ToDo
list - but status still says "Pending Restart" and the software level is
still 7.1b. Sounds like a call to the dreaded tech support is needed :-(

I've heard that some people had to pull power to restart it after the
update. I'd definitely try this if it's been hung overnight before
wading through the support swamp..

He has already stated he has done BOTH of the above and neither worked.

OK, the latest - I think it's really dead.

a) powered it down for 3 hours, replugged in this morning, when I came home
from work 9 hrs later it was STILL hung on "Updating System" screen
b) found a Torx screwdriver, opened it up, blew away all the dust/dirt,
cleaned the fan with compressed air (who knows? maybe heat was the culprit)
c) connected it to a TV in another room: just cable box, TV and TiVo
d) it's in a COOL place
e) result: been stuck the last 90 mins on the "Updating System" screen. NADA

So unless anyone has any helpful suggestions, I think it's off to Best Buy
for a new box. Or maybe Weaknees for a replacement drive...

Thanks to all for your past 2 cents' worth, and in advance to all new
respondents.....
