This may be a dumb question but does anyone know if it is possible to
hook up one of those great big old c band sats/receivers to bell/dish
etc..?

I doubt it very much. Most receivers like Bev or Dishnet & others have
programmed cards that control programming reception. But I'll let the
experts on this NG answer that more technically for you.

You can use the dish in place of the small dish, but the receiver and the
LNB
must be designed for the small dish. A number of companies sell DBS adapters
that allow you to add an LNB for the small dish to an existing C/Ku band
feedhorn
on your big dish. Then you just point it at the small dish satellite and off
you go.
Again, please note that you must be using the proper receiver to pick it up.
Bell/Dish use the DBS Ku band and an MPEG stream, and your big dish
receiver does not.

Why? Thise services work best with a fixed dish, and their receivers
don't receive other than their programmed service.

Look at one of my favorite sites: lyngsat.com. If you have a c/ku lnb then yes you can pick that up. The question is, is it scrambled or not {refer to the website}? I pick up both direct Tv and Dish network but only things that are not scrambled like NASA-TV.

By the way, when i said c/ku i meant to say that ku only will work as well .
