Would appreciate an informed opinion.

is this a good rig for professional music production?

Dell Latitude 5000 series...

4th gen i5 4310u (2.0 ghz, 3mb cache)
8gb ram (DDR3L 1600mhz)
500 GB HDD (7200 rpm)

No - CPUs designated with a "U" are ultra low power and not really meant for any serious work beyond MS Office and Firefox web browsing. If you're going with any system for any production work, you're actually better off building a desktop.
 


Agreed! However, I have a friend who produces music on-the-go and he really enjoys his Macbook Pro for this reason. However, it's definitely a more costly alternative. :p

Yeah that's the bad thing about Macs is that their price tag is so ridiculously high it's almost unjustifiable. I know lots of people who have abandoned Apple because of this reason.
 
Sadly :( Anwyays, you should fine a laptop that has an atleast i7 Intel Core without a "U" ending. Those types of processors are usually only meant to be increase battery life and give a user decent casual performance.

Music production can be CPU intensive and it may need a great deal of RAM, which the 8GB should suffice!
