I'm not a gamer but im looking for a powerful laptop for university (will start in a few months), I'll be running virtual machines (on VMware) too. anyways I don't have much experience with laptops so im kinda clueless. I heard that Toshiba/Acer/HP/Dell arent good anymore and i cant really afford Apple computers.

My budget is around ~700$

I like lenovo. 3 of them in the family. Mine took a 3 foot drop onto the street (it was wrapped in a thin blanket for protection in my bag, but the shell was dented) and survived. Some come with keyboard drains to direct accidental spills away from the main components. My brother turned his over after spilling rather than unplugging and holding in the power button, so he fried his mobo despite the keyboard drain. My sister's is newest and is fine. Hers came with mouse buttons integrated into the touchpad. The touchpad rocks in order to click, but because your finger is on the touch pad still, the mouse moves making it difficult to accurately click. Just avoid that type of touchpad and get mouse buttons below the touchpad. The mini-navigator is helpful if you use it on a train, bus, or plane because your hand doesn't need to be so close to you to move the mouse when the laptop is sitting on your lap.

When it comes to VM, just look up the laptop's processor model first. Some will support Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x). At that price range, you can probably get an i5 Processor. Avoid the lower clocked Low Voltage or Ultra Low voltage processors (generally, you want the processor's model number to end with an M, not a U or Y)

Whatever the case, BE SURE to burn the backup DVDs if it doesn't come with them. Skipping that step is a common mistake and you will then either have to hunt down stock Widnows Disks online or buy the specialized Manufacturer disks if the hard drive dies or you get a nasty virus. Trust me, it's easier to burn them right away.

Go with a custom built one from a website like Cyber Power or PC Specialist (UK only). They are much more powerful for much less money.
