Calls breaking up

I have a GT-I8190N Samsung Galaxy S3 mini that is unlocked. It is GSM capable.

When I install my 3G mini Sim and identify the IMEI to the AT&T network, I am able to call and receive calls but the calls break up during talk time and sound like they are in a tin can.

I contacted AT&T tech and they could not identify any problems with their side of the system.

There is 5 bar signal strength, mobile data is 'Edge' and working, and I have no text plan. The web browser works great and I can receive email.

Is the phone bad or is it something else?

This situation happens with and without a headset. According to AT&T tech this phone is a Sprint phone and will have problems with AT&T network (BS).

I have found that working AT&T tech for the past three hours that they say there is not a problem with their network, but when I make a call from my home the called individual hears fading audio and the audio is breaking up.

Could there be interference caused by other wireless in the local?
