Phone doesn't recognize files on my external sd

Third party apps such as QuickPic and n7 music player can see the files on my sd, but when i try to go into Gallery or to Sounds (to change the ringtone), I can't see any of the files that are in the sd card.

It was running file until a week ago. Suddenly I can't see it. I've been shutting it down and restarting, removed the sd and put it in again to no avail.

Do I have any other option but to backup everything on my phone and do a factory reset?

Running a 4.1.2 btw.

first use an sd card reader/usb sd card reader to plug the sd card into your pc, then backup everything. delete the partition and format, then copy the files back to the card. this will rule out problems with the sd card before you do a factory reset.
