Rooted phone. System apps

I have a rooted phone, and I just realized the default launcher in my phone uses a hella lot of RAM. My phone anyway has low RAM. I don't really use the launcher so I was wondering if I could download a lighter launcher and copy it to the system and make it a system app. If I do this, does the apk file automatically get on to my phone or using Root Explorer do I have to copy it, I can do so if required but I just want to know.

To make it a system app you have to copy it to root\system\app\. Not the other way round.
