I don't really know much about tablets, but my parents have decided I need one for school and have offered to buy me one, as long as it's under $500. Sweet! I'm not complaining, so does anyone have any recommendations? I'd need it for drawing, but I would also like to be able to do other things on it as well like view powerpoint presentations or browse the web. Are those features possible together? If not then forget the drawing aspect, I can manage with just paper and pencil.

Are you sure you're not getting Windows 8 and Windows RT confused? Tablets running full Windows run a full license of Windows. And these tablets run EXE files. Tablets running Windows RT (Microsoft Surface, etc) do not run EXE files.

OP - check out the Dell Venue 11 - that might be what you are looking for: http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/19/campaigns/dell-venue-tablets-dhs-us?c=us&l=en&ref=hp1&s=dhs

I had a Surface for a couple of days before I realized how bad Windows RT is. Thankfully I was able to return it for a full refund, but that's why I am now thinking about getting a Dell Venue - which does run Windows 8.1.

The LG G pad seems like a solid recommendation. I use a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 as a Computer Science major and it had worked well for me. I can create and view PP presentations anytime I want. Most of my books are on there as well. It is very convenient. Not to mention the 8inch for me is a sweet spot for tablet size. The only Downside to the Galaxy tab 8.0 is the Screen resolution. That is why I plan to upgrade to the LG G Pad it will have a 1920x1200 display vs. the 1280x800 trash of the galaxy. It will also be 8.3 inches.

Also keep in mind most tablets will allow you to view PP presentations with the downloading of an app if they don’t support it natively. As for the drawing a Galaxy Not will probably be the most solid with the addition of the SPen, however it is not very detailed.

Galaxy Tab 8.0 $299

LG Gpad: Still to be announced for the US but if its release in the UK is any evidence (£250) that should be around $300-350. Again that is just an estimate but I’m sure you get the picture.

Looks like it's going to be released in the US in early November: http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-57607958-251/lg-g-pad-8.3-comes-to-bestbuy-for-$350-nov-3/
