Best time to charge device for best battery life

Well the other day the battery in my HTC Thunderbolt died and bulged (back cover won't fit on) it only lasts about 30min off the charger before it dies at like half battery. ANYWAY, I have a new battery coming wed. I was wondering when the best time to charge the battery is for the best battery life and best for the lifespan of the battery. I usually fully charge my devices, drain them to about 5% then charge them back up, I also read that charging them at 50% ish is better. Any input or suggestions on what to do?

Dispose of the previous battery ASAP! those are lithium based and can be very harmful! The bulging means the battery is shot of course. DO not try and charge or use the battery please. This battery holds the potential to start a fire trust me.
