laptop light becomes dim

My laptop light becomes dim when the charger is unplugged..please tell me the reason..

By default, the screen dims to save power when running on the battery.

If you're using Windows 7 (not sure if it still works this way in 8):
There should be a battery icon on the bottom right of you screen, in the taskbar. Click on it, and choose 'adjust screen brightness'.
A window opens and there's a slider on the bottom that you can adjust.
