How does the gt 740m compare to the gt 650m

im getting a new computer very soon and this is one of the the main differences between the two i want. the computer will be used to play games like Borderlands 2, Planetside 2, TF2, Crysis 2, sr3&4, etc. on 720p medium or higher with 30+ fps.

dv6tqe-i7-3630qm, GT650m 1gb GDDR5, 8gb (696.39USD with HP EPP)

ENVY 15t-j000-i5-3230m, GT 740m 2gb GDDr3, 6gb (676.79USD with HP EPP)

My main concern is the graphics card becuase the most cpu intensive thing i will be doing will be playing games and the price difference doesnt matter to me.

They're very comparable. The 740M might be worth more consideration, simply because it's more likely to have adopted different drivers and firmware that NVidia may have optimized for said games since the 650M.

The 650M seems to perform better (look at the game benchmarks near the bottom). I guess that's the last time I'll base much off of game-debate.

Look at a few of the graphics settings on each game. In some cases, the 650M outperforms the 740M by nearly 30%. That equates to a noticeable FPS difference, depending on your settings.

Also important to note all that the 740M cards in the new ENVY 15t series appear to be GK208 chips with only a 64bit memory bus, so it wont match the performance of the 128bit 740M review on notebookcheck. I've seen a few pictures of store models showing 64bit, and I emailed an HP sales rep who also confirmed they are GK208 chips on the US CTOs . If the 650M is a stock configuration, it should definitely outperform the 740M for gaming.

yea i dont get why it has a GT 740m and not a GT 750m which would make more sense. the GT 650m laptop is a hp DV6t quad edition with 1 gb of GDDR5 (at least thats what it's listed as) so im assuming a a normal GT 650m. will the 1gb instead of 2gb be a bottle neck for teh GT 650m or will it be fine

1 GB should still be fine for mobile gaming as far as I know, especially at 720p.

There should be a 750M option for the Envy coming soon - it's already on some pre-built Envy 15t models around the world and I think someone said it was coming as a customizable option a month after the initial release (which was around June 5, so another ~2 weeks away), but HP hasn't made any official announcements on the release date, so that might not be accurate for wherever you are. I went ahead and ordered an Envy with a 740M because I wont be using it for much gaming, but if it's too slow, it's possible the 750M upgrade could be released before my 21 day return period is up and I could swap it for an upgraded model. But if I had wanted more gaming power rather than cpu power (I chose the i7)/battery life and didn't want to wait for/risk a quick 750M upgrade option, I would have gone with the dv6.

Yeah, vRAM capacity is not the bottleneck, especially at 1 GB (for gaming). Bottlenecks are more synonymous with clocks.
