I have been looking at buying the Asus G46vw laptop. Is it worth waiting for the 4th generation intel or should I get the 3rd gen at a cheaper price and then upgrade the processor from there? Also, I would want a SSD later on, but which would fit? I am trying to keep the budget under 1000 for the laptop only, which is one reason why I am looking at the G46vw

9 times out of 10 the HDD is going to be the determining factor in weather or not the laptop can perform. the CPU, quite important, but it's a combo deal, the best I7 in the world is no good with a horribly slow HDD

Agree on 100% here !

I advise you to look for an model that you can add 2 HDD
1x 128 GB SSD - for OS - if you go for more space SSD will easy eat you 1000 $ budget and you can`t manage with only 128GB but you get VERY fast OS, 2D and even 3D performance will rise
1 x 500 , 640 , 750 GB HDD - what ever space you like - that`s how you have second VERRY slow disk for data

the other specs you can choose what you like regarding 1000 $ budget - you can`t chose Alienware for example.
