Using the FAQ as directed.

1. Budget <$1000
2. Small / light as possible. I cycle 30km to uni everyday
3. Not fussed about screen resolution.
4. I own a desktop, this is just for taking notes
5. Need at least 6 hours battery life (ideally more)
6. Don't play any games/watch movies
7. I'm only using this for Microsoft excel, word, onenote + some other statistical programs (Eg SAS)
8. Don't care about Harddrive space
9. No idea where to buy it
10. I want to keep this laptop for around 4 years
11. Don't need a CD/DVD drive
12. No brand bias
13. Live in Australia

One thing that I would really like is a touch screen ideally with a stylus. This computer is mainly for taking notes and doing excel, so I want to be able to handwrite diagrams and equations to supplement my typed notes as I see them in lectures. I would also like windows 8 because hey, why go backwards?

Thanks guys.

This is the case, You can get an i5 equipped Surface TAB or Acer Iconia W7 Tablet.
Here are the links:
http://www.android-enjoyed.com/microsoft-surface-pro-128gb-black.html

As you will be doing typing works etc. you will be in need of windows not android. An atom processor will be also good for you. Also see these links:

This above link as an Iconia tab that comes with 64gb storage. You can upgrade it with a memory card as these tablets come with card reader slot.

The i5 equipped PC's are light weight also and will work with you for a longer time.

Battery life is excellent in all the above PC's that is -- of atleast 8 to 9 Hours.
If you also buy the keyboard dock with these tablets and will to carry with you, you will get an extra battery life of 8 Hours

You can go the expensive route and get a cheap macbook for that but I'd recommend just getting a tablet and using cloud storage. With a nexus 7 there isn't much you can't do. You're obviously not attached to the idea of a mouse; take the next step and realize how unnecessary the keyboard is too!

There are some great articles on www.androidtabletspecs.com that can point you in the right direction. They haven't steered me wrong yet.
