Acer Laptop not working

Hey, my girlfriend's Acer laptop boots up incredibly slowly, and will not run any program properly. We tried starting it in safe mode, but even then it wouldn't load any programs. We tried a system restore, and that failed.
We have no warranty and I'm honestly extremely frustrated with Acer, this laptop has always been a piece of *** but it's all my girlfriend has.
We've tried booting it without the battery and with the battery and I thought it could be malware but since nothing will work even in safe mode I assume it's an issue with the computer.
This happened all very suddenly, and we haven't installed or downloaded anything new that should have caused this problem.

My first suggestion would be to check the SMART status of the Hard Drive.

If it passes an extended SMART test, Click START > RUN > cmd
type:
chkdsk c: /r
at the command prompt. It will tell you device is in use, and ask if you want to run at startup. Say Yes and reboot.

Run a hard drive test in DOS... HIRENS BOOT CD etc, it sounds like a failing hard drive... do NOT do this if you have an SSD...
