Laptop screen is broken and it wont work on a monitor

Hello,
I have a HP laptop and I dropped . My sceen is totally broken it wont even turn on but the laptop turns on I can hear the sound to. Ive tried to use an external monitor but it doesn't work. I need my files from that laptop really bad. Please someone help me WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

Do you have access to another computer? If yes, you can remove the hard drive, place it in an external drive enclosure and connect it to the computer and retrieve your files.

You can replace the screen yourself. It's a very easy process that takes only about 15 - 20 minutes. There are many places you can get a replacement screen; I have used a company called Screen Tek; their prices are very reasonable and I think they must have a replacement screen for every model of laptop, including HP.

There is some not very good advice here about replacing the screen

DO NOT replace the screen yet as it CANNOT be just that as it SHOULD still work on an external and you say it wont...

Laptop repair shop for diagnosis... when you dropped it you MAY have broken the motherboard.... which would make changing the screen totally pointless...
